Take a Voyage on Polo & Panâs Funky âCaravelleâ at Coachella 2019 & Beyond [Q&A]
As most purveyors of electronic music are well-aware, Europe tends to be ahead of the curve when it comes to inventing, performing and permeating fresh sounds throughout the rest of the planet. One such case is Polo & Pan, the eccentric French dance duo comprising Paul Armand-Delille and Alexandre Grynszpan. Combining unpredictable arrangements of jazz, soul, funk, disco, and house, Polo & Pan recently invited US fans into their vibrant and immersive live show on a nearly sold out North American tour.
Claiming that their music is for âpleasure, fun and contemplation,â Los Angeles fans were visibly stunned when the duo stepped on the stage at the Fonda Theatre on a chilly December night. While their sound is clearly rooted in their French origins, Polo & Pan took audiences to a different, exotic part of the world with each song from their Caravelle album. Songs like âCanopĂ©eâ transported us to the Brazilian tropical forest, while âBakaraâ allowed us to dance along the banks of the African Congo River -- all while Paul & Alex hyped the audience with live instrumental and vocal bouts.Â
We caught up with Polo & Pan while they were in town, touching on their Disney influences, ones to watch, and whatâs up next for the pair (including a set at this yearâs Coachella festival!)
OTW: How did each of you get into producing?
Paul : The summer before going to college I listen to Air's Moon Safari. I was blown away and started getting interested in how such amazing music may be produced. It started then and there in 1999.
Pan: I started producing when I was 12 with "hip hop ejay;" at first I really wanted to produce hip hop instrumentals because I loved rap music. Thanks to hip hop and samples, I discovered jazz, soul, funk, disco, groove, and I decided to go further in my musical quest.
OTW: What was it about each otherâs personalities and production/DJ styles that made you decide to make music together?
Paul : Alex and I are very different, hence complimentary. From him, I learned the virtue of doing the same thing over and over again to make it perfect, the ability to read and direct a crowd better, the idea of dramatizing a DJ set and moving away from a linear performance...
Pan: Paul taught me how important it is to use analogic and organic sounds to make your production alive.
youtube
OTW: What do you hope people learn about French culture and music by listening to your songs?
Whatever they want to take from it really. Our music is for pleasure, fun and contemplation mainly.
OTW: You have mentioned Disney as being a big influence in your music. Which Disney movie/story has impacted your music, and yourselves, the most?
Pan : Well, obviously Jungle Book is one of our favorites, we have a lot fo tropical influences.
Paul : I have beautiful memories of the 90s pictures also. I watched Aladdin and Lion King tons of times.
OTW: Your beats are so eclectic and unpredictable â how do you typically go about creating and arranging them?
We don't really have a guideline which enhances the unpredictability. We are always looking for influences and inspirational starting points for a song -- A movie (âDorothyâ), a sample (âZoom Zoomâ), a mathematical concept (Jacquadi), meeting a new musician (âBakaraâ).
youtube
OTW: Who are 3-5 of your ones to watch?
Our three to watch are: You Man, Lewis Of Man and Asa Moto.
OTW: How was the US tour and how have you seen American audiences react to your live show?
The tour was absolutely fantastic. We are getting great turn out with more and more American fans in the crowd. We couldn't be happier.
OTW: Whatâs up next for you guys?
We are collaborating with infamous 70s OST composer, Vladimir Cosma. We will be on stage in January in Paris to perform with a symphonic orchestra. And we will return to America for Coachella. A very exciting challenge indeed!

Polo & Pan @ the Echoplex | June 19
Less than a minute into the UberPool Iâve ordered to the Echoplex, a hard French accent from the backseat asks âare you also going to the show tonight? for Polo & Panâ. Smiling cheek to cheek, my head whips back to respond that I definitely am.Â
With undoubtedly more popularity abroad, the French duos very first North American tour already held much promise with several sold out shows, including this one in Echo Park, Los Angeles. If there was a first impression to be made, Polo & Pan instantly - and quite impressively - proved their ability to bring people together all around the world. From discovering them through my Lebanese roommate, to meeting and hearing the congregation of local French diaspora, to making conversation w/ Nebraskan strangers who had first heard Polo & Panâs enchanting beats on a special kind of trip in Guatemala.
The electro DJ duo, consisting of âPolocorpâ (Paul Armand-Delillle) and âPeter Panâ(Alexandre Grynszpan), united in Parisien nightclub Baron, 2012 after cultivating their own solo careers. Three years, four EPs, and one full album later - America would come to welcome them with open and sweaty arms. Staying close to home, they were opened by friend and fellow electro musician Jean Tonique; who warmed up the crowd with funky disco beats, with songs âUn rĂȘve Ă deuxâ and âGuestâ. Tonique took to live loops as he bounced between guitar and mixboard; and after a solid 40 minutes, he humbly turned the stage over to crew who prepared it for the much anticipated pair.Â
Polo, who - onstage - very much looks like the French cross of Mark Ruffalo and Will Ferrell, appeared limping on a single crutch with Pan close behind him. The two announced their excitement to finally be in LA and alas, commenced what would feel like the most intense Zumba class Iâve ever been a part of. The two transported their equally eclectic fans to a range of âdestinationsâ, from the refreshing wild beats of âMexicaliâ, the adventurous melodies in âAqualandâ, the mellowed tune of âPlage isolĂ©eâ, and the breezy sounds of the âCanopĂ©eâ. In the nearly two hour set they held down, not even for a moment did the energy in the room cease to peak. Polo led a game of Simon says, people chanted in celebration of partying on a Tuesday night, and dance circles took form all across the venue.Â
There was something so special in getting to experience the way that Polo & Pan lead a room. The way that their music sounds and feels like the vast amount of heart and soul they pour into their work; and as they played another generous 30 minute encore set, it was clear as day that they loved what they do, what they make, and who they do it for. Their performance reminded me of the kind of magic that got me hooked on seeing artists perform live in the first place when I was a (much younger) teen. A kind of magic, that despite frequenting many shows and festivals alike, I havenât felt in a very long time.Â

Interview with Polo & Pan
We had the pleasure of interviewing Paul Armand-Delille (Polo) of Polo & Pan over Zoom video! Parisian duo Polo & Pan have released their second full length album Cyclorama, featuring 14 tracks fitting for summer. The timeless band fine tunes their sound on Cyclorama, vibrantly exploring themes like transcendence, life, and death with a matured combination of dance, techno, disco, and psychedelia. The albumâs lead single that arrived earlier this year, âAni Kuni,â is growing rapidly, crossing top 40 at French airplay and already at over 5 million streams in less than two months. The album also features three songs from the bandâs 2020 EP Feel Good, as well as the three recent tracks they have released in 2021: âAni Kuni,â âTunnel feat. Channel Tres,â and âLes jolies choses.â Polo & Pan have been praised by the likes of E! News, Consequence of Sound, Dancing Astronaut, and more. With tickets to their US tour going on sale just two weeks ago, they quickly sold out shows in both New York City and Los Angeles.  Listen to Cyclorama HERE.  âAfter a four year long cruise around the world onboard the âCaravelle,â the time was ripe for us to come back to the studio. We spent many a sleepless night gazing at our instruments and thinking about what our second album should sound like. We are finally ready to unveil âCYCLORAMA,â said Polo & Pan. âThis new musical voyage will take you on a journey through life, from birth to death and on to transcendence. We invite all of you to find your own itinerary through this shared musical odyssey. Set your compass as you wish and get ready to go full circle with âCYCLORAMA!ââ Cyclorama is Polo & Pan fully realized: hedonism matured, sounds fine-tuned, scope widened. Highlights like âFeel Goodâ and the ELO-inspired âMagicâ bring vibrant, summery joy into an emerging world, while Polo & Pan also take moments to explore different introspective and darker, deeper tones. âRequiem,â âJiminy,â and âTunnelâ â the latter of which is a collaboration with Compton rapper Channel Tres â take the bandâs slick tempos into a new realm of urban allure and mystique, while paying homage to their classic French sound.  The duo, who have amassed nearly half a billion global streams, have released just one album prior: 2017âs Caravelle, which was called a âvoyage across blissful destinations⊠that invites surprise and enchantmentâ by the New Yorker. It led to Paul Armand-Delille (Polo) and Alexandre Grynszpan (Pan) being able to perform their music around the world to sold-out crowds at notable venues like LAâs Novo, Londonâs Printworks, NYâs Terminal 5, and Montrealâs MTELUS. Theyâve also played numerous festival stages such as 2019âs Coachella where Billboard called their performance âwithout a doubt one of the best performances.â We want to hear from you! Soviet Jewish Red Army Captain During World War II Alexandr âSashaâ Pechersky   Uncredited and Undated Photograph
Sasha Pechersky had been a captain in Red Army forces when he was captured by the nazis. Â He was sent to the Sobibor slave labor and extermination camp. Â Because of his health (from good rations while in the Red Army), Sasha was not immediately murdered, as were most people sent to Sobibor. Â Instead, he was placed in a slave labor battalion, a group that would be worked to death or murdered when their strength declined to the point they could no longer work. Â Pechersky earned the respect of other camp prisoners when, shortly after being sent there, he observed a Dutch Jew being whipped by SS Officer Karl Frenzel for working too slowly. Â Frenzel, thinking heâd have some fun, asked Pechersky if he didnât like what he had seen. Â Sasha replied that he didnât. Â Frenzy then directed Pechersky to a large tree stump the imprisoned workers were supposed to split. Â He said Pechersky had 5 minutes to split the trunk on his own. Â If he failed, he, too, would be whipped. Â If he succeeded, Frenzel would give him a pack of cigarettes. Â Sasha finished chopping the trunk in less than 5 minutes. Â He declined to accept the cigarettes from Frenzel. Â Frenzel then offered him bread and butter. Â In a concentration camp, where inmates were intentionally starved, this was a very big deal. Â Pechersky again refused. Â On account of his defiance of the nazis, he was approached by the underground that had been formed among the imprisoned Jews. Â Pechersky quickly rose to a leadership position among the partisans of the camp. Â Knowing that Sobibor was soon to be closed and its living slaves gassed, Pechersky hatched a plan to revolt and escape. Â On Oct 14, 1943, the slaves revolted, targeting especially nazi officers. Â They were successful beyond their wildest dreams, breached the camp fence and fled into the woods. Â Sadly, once escaped, most were then hunted down and killed. Â Remarkably, Sasha Pechersky survived, united with two other camp escapees who found one another in the woods, and wandered through the forest for a while, until they encountered the fighting Jewish partisan group headed by Yehiel Grynszpan. Â Sasha Pechersky fought with that group for another year, until Red Army troops drove the fascists out of the area,
In a sad and disgusting addendum to Sasha Pecherskyâs story, on account of Stalin, the man who destroyed the Russian Revolution, and his growing anti-semitism, Sasha Pechersky, anti-fascist fighter and Red Army captain, was arrested and charged as a âRootless Cosmopolitanâ (you know, a Jew) in 1948.  He remained imprisoned until Stalin died in 1953.

Un Sónar by Day con electrónica fresca, A/V y French touch
Are Not Enoughâ (2019, Ghostly International).Â
youtube
Ăąme no necesitan presentaciĂłn.
youtube
SĂłnar by Night con viejos conocidos
youtube
Mura Masa.
youtube

Say Goodbye to Quarantine and Hello to Endless Realities With Polo & Panâs âCycloramaâ
Photo: Joe Cruz
Letâs say you are vaccinated, mask-less, and feeling extra grateful as the sun beams down on you and all your friends at the beach. Just as you pop open a cold one, your friend hands you the aux cord (or rather, reveals the Bluetooth name). What do you play?
Polo & Pan (Paul Armand-Delille and Alexandre Grynszpan) have just unveiled Cyclorama, their sophomore album made precisely for such situations, both imagined and in reality. In theatre, âcycloramaâ is defined as the âbackground device employed to cover the back/sides of the stage and used with special lighting to create the illusion of sky, open space, or great distance,â a very fitting title for an album inspired by the duoâs love for French cinema.Â
While Polo & Panâs debut album, Caravelle, took listeners on an expedition aboard their caravel (a small, highly-maneuverable sailing ship) from the Brazilian tropical forest to the banks of the African Congo River, Cyclorama transcends the idea of space altogether, constructing an infinite gateway through time and reality.
The Parisian duoâs blend of house, pop, disco, and psychedelia never allows itself to fall under one genre label but rather can be described as a journey through time, a sonic portal to other countries, cultures, eras, and fictional lands. With Cyclorama, Polo & Pan have somehow managed to surpass the precedent they set with their highly-acclaimed Caravelle, describing the transition in their own words, âItâs a musical odyssey through the steps of human existence from birth to adulthood to death⊠and transcendence! After our first journey in space with âCaravelle,â we canât wait to take you on a hedonistic excursion through time with âCyclorama.ââ
The album opens with âCoÌme,â a proper Disney-esque intro into the various soundscapes to come. If Cyclorama was Alice In Wonderland, then âCoÌmeâ would certainly be the soundtrack to Aliceâs descent down the rabbit hole. Weâre immediately catapulted into Polo & Panâs magical world with âAni Kuni,â which Alexandre Grynszpan (Pan) wrote for his son âas a tribute to [their] favorite childhood lullaby, a timeless Native-American song that has touched generation after generation all around the world.â Complete with a vibrant visual that doubles up as an enchanting lyric video, âAni Kuniâ is certainly an early standout on Cyclorama.
youtube
Next up is âMagic,â an uplifting tune which fans originally heard in Polo & Panâs Home Sweet Home, an hour-long mixtape released May 2020 that certainly saved many from the bleak depths of quarantine. âAttrape-reÌve,â âFeel Good,â and âPeter Panâ were all released as part of the duoâs Feel Good EP in July 2020, embodying the whimsical, free-spirited French escape that we so desperately needed. Victoria Lafaurie, who also performs live with the band, lends her ethereal vocals to âAttrape-RĂȘve,â which appropriately translates to dream catcher.
The pair shared more on their creative inspiration for Feel Good, âThe more we have traveled, both geographically and from a sonic point of view, the larger the canvas. Imagination is memory and by listening to thousands of songs, syntheses are formed in our creative process. We exchange our ideas and choose the best without ever listening to our ego. We let our fantasies speak. âFeel Goodâ takes us sailing on the Nile or exploring across the Amazon.â
The album transitions from a daytime beach party to a European nightclub circa four a.m. with âTunnel,â featuring the seductive vocals of none other than Compton-bred rapper, singer, and producer Channel Tres. Armand-Delille and Grynszpan shared on the collaboration, â[Channel Tres] guided us wisely on our first incursion into urban musical territory and ensured we delivered a razor sharp sensual club track together.â
âRequiemâ feels like an intermission of sorts, a medley of cinematically- arranged synths leading listeners into the next stage of Polo & Panâs fantastical voyage. Following the sing-along summer anthem âFeel Good,â we re-enter otherworldly French-kissed territory with âMelody,â âOasis,â and âArtemis.â âJiminyâ and âBilboquet (Sirba)â are bouncy, playful, and multi-textured, giving rise to the most romantic track on the Cyclorama, âLes jolies choses.â The song conjures a vignette of Paris in black-and-white with a palpable lust for life and love in the air. Â The pair expanded, âItâs an unabashedly romantic description of the beautiful moments of a relationship set in the sandy dunes of âCap-Ferretâ. A nostalgic postcard of the French way of life and love.â
âPeter Pan,â the albumâs closing track, encapsulates Polo & Panâs resistance to âgrowing upâ and accordingly, plays out like a lullaby into the endless imagination.Â
You can expect Polo & Panâs Cyclorama to take on an even more elevated, bass-heavy sound on their upcoming tour, hitting major cities in Europe and North America through mid-2022. Take it from someone who was lucky enough to see the duo live twice: this is a show you do not want to miss.

"For CanopĂ©e, we always had a vision of a fairytale taking place in the heart of the jungle.
